Kigoma
Kigoma is a place that slips under the radar, overshadowed by Tanzania’s more famous destinations. There are no safari jeeps at sunset, no beaches humming with tourists. Instead, there’s Lake Tanganyika—a body of water so deep and clear it feels like looking into a giant aquarium. The lake stretches for hundreds of miles, shared by four countries, its shores shifting from sheer cliffs to quiet coves where the sand is warm and the only sound is the lapping of waves.

Life here moves at its own pace. Fishermen return at dawn with their catch, women sell fresh ndazi and bananas at the market, and in the evenings, locals gather by the docks to talk, their voices mingling with the water’s murmur.

This is also the gateway to some of Tanzania’s wildest corners. From Kigoma, you can set off for Gombe Stream National Park, where Jane Goodall studied chimpanzees. The journey isn’t easy—first by boat across the lake, then on foot through dense forest trails—but those who make the trip see chimpanzees moving freely. They’re used to humans but keep their distance. Spending a few days in Gombe means waking to their calls echoing through the trees, watching them forage and play, and noticing how thin the line is between us and them.

Kigoma itself is small and unassuming. The streets are dusty, most buildings are low-slung, and you can walk from one end of town to the other in under an hour. In the central square stands a statue of David Livingstone, the explorer who passed through in the 19th century. Around the statue, vendors sell hand-carved wooden figures, fabrics, and shell necklaces. Prices are lower than in Dar es Salaam’s tourist shops, and bargaining is part of the rhythm of the place.

This isn’t a destination for those seeking luxury. There are no ATMs, no high-end restaurants. But if you want to experience Tanzania as it is—not the postcard version, but the one that pulses with everyday life—Kigoma delivers.

Mornings start with the crow of roosters and the smell of fried lake fish sizzling over coals. Afternoons might be spent wandering the shore, where kids kick soccer balls and old men mend fishing nets. As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple, time seems to slow. That’s the magic of Kigoma: the sense that here, for a little while, you can step out of the rush and into something simpler.
