Byblos is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with over seven thousand years of human activity. Its streets follow the same paths trodden by Phoenician sailors, Roman merchants, and medieval knights. Ancient walls stand next to quiet cafés, and Crusader towers overlook modern yachts in the harbor. The past isn’t hidden—it’s part of everyday life. Sunlight catches the cracks in mosaics, palm shadows stretch across fortress walls, and the scent of fresh bread drifts from corner bakeries.

The Phoenicians left their mark here. The alphabet originated in Byblos, shaping scripts used worldwide today. The city was a trade hub, sending cedar, purple dye, and glass across the Mediterranean. Ruins of Phoenician temples and a necropolis with weathered sarcophagi remain, but the sea’s influence is stronger. The harbor still buzzes with fishing boats and vendors selling seafood and spices. Trade hasn’t vanished; it’s just quieter now.

The Crusader castle dominates the skyline, but Byblos has more to offer. A Roman theater hides between houses, a souk sells handmade goods, and a beach draws locals and visitors alike. In summer, festivals, concerts, and art exhibitions fill the streets. Winter brings a different mood—rain cleans ancient stones, and cafés serve cardamom-spiced coffee to those seeking warmth.

Byblos isn’t crowded like Beirut or Baalbek. You’ll find warm hospitality, bold flavors, and a pace that lets you breathe. Locals might guide you to the best falafel stand or a hidden alley with sea views. As evening falls, the city glows under lamplight, and the sound of waves slows time. The past isn’t just remembered here—it’s still alive.
