Karakorum
Karakorum feels like a place where time has paused. Once the capital of the Mongol Empire, it was the center of power for a domain that stretched from China to Europe. Now, the wind sweeps through its quiet streets, carrying whispers of its past.

Founded by Genghis Khan in the early 1200s, the city was the heart of an empire. What survives are the ruins: fragments of pottery, coins, and the foundations of buildings that once housed merchants, scholars, and rulers. The most striking remnant is the site of Ögedei Khan’s palace. Today, only the outlines of those walls remain, but they hint at halls once adorned with gold and silk, where decisions shaped nations.

Nearby, the Erdene Zuu Monastery stands as one of Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist sites, built in the late 16th century on the ruins of Karakorum. Enclosed by a high white wall lined with stupas, it’s a place where history and faith meet. Inside, temples display murals and statues of Buddha, while monks still live and practice within its walls. You might hear the murmur of prayers or witness a ceremony.

The city is surrounded by the Mongolian steppe. The landscape shifts with the seasons—lush in summer, stark under winter’s snow. Nomadic families live here as they have for centuries, herding livestock and dwelling in gers. Staying in one, sipping airag, lets you taste a way of life that has endured.

Karakorum isn’t for those seeking luxury. It’s for travelers who want to step into history and see how people live in harmony with the land. There are no grand hotels, but there’s authenticity. The city doesn’t try to impress; it simply exists, and in that quiet presence, it lingers in your memory.

If you come to Mongolia, visit Karakorum. You might find the clarity you didn’t know you needed.
