Jūrmala stretches along the Gulf of Riga for nearly thirty kilometers—a slender strip between sea and forest. The air here carries pine resin and salt in summer, frost and woodsmoke in winter. Houses peek from behind sand dunes or stand on the shore, streets wind through greenery, and district names like Majori, Dubulti, and Jaunķemeri sound like an invitation to slow down.

Once fishing villages, these settlements became retreats for Riga’s residents in the 19th century, then St. Petersburg’s elite, and later European aristocracy. The architecture still reflects that era: wooden villas with carved balconies, Art Nouveau mansions, and cottages with attic windows. Some now house hotels or restaurants, but even newer buildings fit the unhurried, nostalgic mood.

Beaches here are wide, sandy, and gently sloping—ideal for families. But the pine forests edging the shore are where the real quiet lies. On hot days, you can step into their shade; in the evening, walk paths where waves mix with rustling needles. The gulf warms faster than the open sea, so swimming starts earlier and lasts longer. In winter, snow-dusted dunes and frost-covered pines turn the coast into something almost unreal.

Jūrmala’s rhythm changes with the seasons. Summers bring music—festivals at Dzintari Concert Hall, street performers along the promenade, gatherings in parks. Autumn and spring are quieter: empty beaches, cafés with homemade pastries, bike rides along the coast. Winter offers firelit restaurants, Christmas markets, or walks through snow-covered forests.

Twenty kilometers from Riga, Jūrmala is easy to reach by train, bus, or car. Yet many come to avoid rushing. There are no grand landmarks here—just the sound of waves in the morning, a day by the sea, and coffee in a café overlooking the water.
