Valmiera
Valmiera sits on the Gauja River, where the water moves slowly and the streets follow the same unhurried rhythm. There are no crowds here, no neon signs—just the sound of the river, the old rooftops, and the way the light changes over them. The city mixes its medieval past with the present: stone walls stand next to cafés, and people switch between Latvian and Russian mid-sentence.

The past in the stones
Valmiera began as a fortified settlement in the 13th century, a stop on a trade route. St. Simon’s Church, built by the Livonian Order, still anchors the oldest part of the city. Its Gothic tower rises above the rooftops, and inside, the frescoes and tombstones tell stories of the people who lived here centuries ago. Nearby, fragments of the old city walls remain—not as a relic, but as part of the city’s life, hosting summer festivals and concerts.

The Valmiera Gymnasium, one of Latvia’s oldest schools, has been teaching students since the 17th century. The city’s theater, open since the 19th century, still stages performances. In summer, the promenade along the Gauja fills with music; in winter, the frozen riverbanks become sledding hills, and the parks light up for the season.

Locals say everyone knows each other, but no one interferes. You can wander quiet backstreets or sit in a café and talk to someone who’s lived here all their life.

The river and the forest
The Gauja is more than a river—it’s the city’s connection to the wild. Just beyond the outskirts, the Gauja National Park begins. In summer, people hike and raft; in autumn, the forests turn gold and red. Winter brings skiers and ice fishermen, and the snow quiets everything.

You can wake up in a downtown apartment and, in half an hour, be on a forest trail, listening to the snow crunch under your boots.

A place that doesn’t pretend
Valmiera isn’t Riga or Jurmala. There are no luxury hotels or entertainment complexes. What it has is the real rhythm of Latvia—the everyday one, where time slows down. A cup of hot chocolate in a café or a walk along the river isn’t just a habit; it’s the way the city works.

This isn’t a place for one-day thrills. It’s for those who want to listen to the quiet, where the best stories aren’t told—they’re lived.
