Weather overview

Трухильо sits on Peru’s northern coast, where the Pacific Ocean meets the desert. The city enjoys a mild, arid climate year-round, with little rain and steady breezes. Temperatures shift gently between seasons, making Трухильо a destination where you can explore comfortably almost any time.

The warmest months in Трухильо are February and March, when daytime highs reach 25.6 °C and 25.7 °C. Evenings stay mild, rarely dropping below 21 °C. From May onward, the air cools slightly, with July and August bringing the coolest weather—around 18.3 °C on average. The ocean follows a similar pattern, warming to 22.6 °C in February and March before cooling to 17.2 °C by October.

Rain is rare in Трухильо, with most months seeing less than 1 mm. The few exceptions come in February and March, when brief showers may appear, but even then, they rarely disrupt plans. The dry air and consistent sunshine make Трухильо an easy place to pack for, whether you’re visiting ancient ruins or coastal neighborhoods.

Temperature

In Трухильо, temperatures move in a gentle rhythm, with the warmest stretch from January to March. During these months, the city averages 21.5–22.9 °C, and daytime highs can climb to 25.7 °C in March. Nights remain comfortable, dipping only to 21 °C in February and March, so light layers are enough for evenings.

From April to August, the air cools gradually, with average temperatures sliding from 20.9 °C in April to 17.4 °C in September. The coolest months, July and August, see daytime highs around 20.2 °C and nighttime lows near 16.2 °C. While the drop isn’t drastic, mornings and evenings can feel crisp, especially near the coast.

By November, warmth returns, with averages rising to 18.5 °C and daytime highs reaching 20.9 °C. The ocean also warms slightly, making beach walks pleasant again. Even in the coolest months, Трухильо rarely feels cold, but the shift from March to September is noticeable enough to guide your choice of clothing.

Precipitation

Трухильо is one of Peru’s driest cities, with most months passing without measurable rain. The few showers that do occur are light and brief, usually in February and March, when monthly totals reach 18.6 mm and 16.1 mm. Even then, rain rarely lasts more than an hour or two, and the sun returns quickly.

From May to November, rain is almost nonexistent, with totals below 1 mm each month. The dry air and lack of humidity make the climate feel even more stable, whether you’re walking through Трухильо’s historic center or exploring the nearby archaeological sites. The only exception is October, when a few scattered showers may bring 6 mm of rain, but these are still rare.

The absence of rain means you won’t need to plan around wet weather, but it also means the landscape stays arid. If you’re used to lush greenery, Трухильо’s desert surroundings may feel stark, though the coastal breeze keeps the air fresh. The dry climate also makes it easier to pack—just bring sun protection and layers for cooler evenings.

What to pack

For a trip to Трухильо, packing light is easy, thanks to the stable, dry climate. From January to March, when temperatures peak, bring breathable clothing like linen or cotton, along with a light jacket for breezy evenings. Sunglasses and a hat are essential year-round, as the sun is strong even in cooler months.

From April to September, when temperatures dip slightly, add a light sweater or long-sleeve shirt for mornings and nights. The coolest months, July and August, may call for a scarf or light jacket, especially if you’re near the coast. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, whether you’re exploring Трухильо’s colonial streets or the nearby ruins.

Since rain is rare, you won’t need waterproof gear, but a compact umbrella can be useful for the occasional shower in February or March. If you plan to swim, the ocean is warmest from January to April, but even in cooler months, the water stays swimmable. A small backpack for day trips and a reusable water bottle will help you stay comfortable in Трухильо’s dry air.
