Weather overview

Самджиён lies in a mountainous region of North Korea, where the climate shifts dramatically with the seasons. Winters here are long and severe, with January and February bringing persistent subzero temperatures. By March, the cold begins to ease, though nights remain frosty until April. The brief summer, from June to August, offers the warmest conditions, though even then, evenings can feel cool at this elevation.

From September, temperatures drop steadily, and by November, winter returns in full force. The contrast between the seasons makes Самджиён a destination where preparation matters—whether you're visiting during the crisp, dry winter or the short, damp summer.

Temperature

In Самджиёне, winter dominates much of the year, with January averaging -16.5 °C and occasional dips below -20 °C at night. February remains bitterly cold, though slightly less extreme, before a gradual thaw begins in March. By April, daytime temperatures rise above freezing, reaching +3.1 °C, but nights can still drop below zero.

The warmest period arrives in July and August, when Самджиён sees highs of +22.6 °C and +21.8 °C respectively. However, even in these months, nights cool to around +14 °C, so layers are useful. September brings a sharp decline, with temperatures falling to +12.7 °C, and by November, the city returns to subzero averages of -5.2 °C.

What to pack

For a winter visit to Самджиён, thermal layers, a heavy coat, gloves, and a hat are essential—temperatures in January and February rarely rise above -10 °C. Waterproof boots will help navigate snow-covered paths, while sunglasses can reduce glare from the bright winter sun.

In May or September, when temperatures hover between +8 °C and +14 °C, a mix of light sweaters and a windproof jacket will suffice. For the summer months of July and August, pack breathable clothing, but don’t forget a light jacket for cooler evenings. A compact umbrella or raincoat is useful during the wet season.
