Weather overview

The weather in Мандалай is shaped by two distinct seasons: a long dry period and a shorter rainy season. From November to April, the city enjoys warm, sunny days with minimal rainfall, making it the most comfortable time to explore. By May, the rains arrive, bringing higher humidity and frequent downpours that last through October.

Travelers visiting Мандалай in the dry season will find pleasant warmth, with daytime temperatures often reaching 30–35 °C and cooler evenings. The rainy season, while lush and green, can be intense, with heavy showers in June, August, and September that may disrupt outdoor plans. Still, the city retains its charm, with fewer crowds and vibrant landscapes.

Temperature

Temperatures in Мандалай remain warm year-round, but the dry season offers the most stable conditions. In January and February, daytime highs average 30–33 °C, while nights cool to around 15–17 °C, providing a refreshing break from the heat. By March and April, the mercury climbs, often exceeding 37 °C, making these the hottest months of the year.

The rainy season brings slight relief from the heat, though humidity rises. From May to October, daytime temperatures hover around 32–35 °C, with nights staying warm at 26–27 °C. The cooling effect of rain is noticeable, but the muggy air can make the heat feel more oppressive than the numbers suggest.

Precipitation

Rainfall in Мандалай is highly seasonal, with nearly all of the year’s precipitation falling between May and October. June, August, and September are the wettest months, with each receiving over 140 mm of rain. Downpours are often heavy but short-lived, giving way to sunny spells.

The dry season, from November to April, sees almost no rain, with February and December recording just 0.1–1 mm. This makes it ideal for outdoor activities, though the lack of rain can leave the landscape parched by April. Travelers should pack accordingly, as the shift from dry to wet can be abrupt in May.

What to pack

For a trip to Мандалай in the dry season, lightweight, breathable clothing is essential. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen will help protect against the strong sun, especially in March and April when temperatures peak. A light jacket or shawl is useful for cooler evenings in January and February.

During the rainy season, quick-drying clothes and waterproof footwear are a must. An umbrella or a compact rain jacket will come in handy for sudden downpours, particularly in June or September. Mosquito repellent is also recommended, as standing water can attract insects. For any time of year, comfortable walking shoes are a good idea for exploring Мандалай’s temples and streets.
