Livingstone

Livingstone clings to Zambia’s southern edge, where the Zambezi widens into a slow-moving sheet just before it plunges over Victoria Falls. The city is named after David Livingstone, the Scottish explorer who lived here in the 1890s. His presence lingers in the low colonial buildings and the flame trees that line the streets, their leaves filtering the sunlight into shifting patterns on the pavement.

It’s small enough to walk across in an hour, but it doesn’t feel like a tourist town. The morning market spills onto the sidewalk, selling mangoes still warm from the sun and wooden hippos that seem to nod when the light catches them. People eat nshima with stewed greens at plastic tables, and if you ask for directions, they’ll point you toward the river and tell you about the ferry that broke down last week. By evening, the streets are quiet, but the bars stay open, the smell of grilled kapenta mixing with the sound of laughter and the occasional burst of music from a phone.

Most visitors come for Victoria Falls. The falls are visible from town as a distant mist, and their roar carries on the wind. But Livingstone has its own pace. You can take a boat down the Zambezi, watching hippos surface with a snort, or walk through Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, where elephants sometimes wander close enough to hear their breath. For adrenaline, there’s the bridge jump or a helicopter flight over the falls. Or you can just sit on the riverbank, listening to the water and the birds and the occasional splash from a passing canoe.

The rains turn the land green, and the river rises, carrying branches and sometimes crocodiles. In the dry season, the grass bleaches to gold, and the air smells of dust and woodsmoke. The town moves with these changes. Fishermen mend their nets by the water, and the sunset turns the sky the color of the earth.

What stays with you isn’t the falls or the adrenaline. It’s the way the light slants through the trees in the late afternoon, or the sound of drums drifting from a village across the river. It’s the feeling that time here moves with the river, slow and steady. You don’t visit Livingstone—you let it settle into you.
