La Paz sits in a bowl of the Andes, high enough that the air thins and the sun burns even when the wind carries a chill. The city clings to the slopes, its streets twisting without logic, defying the grid of more orderly places. Below, glass towers and government buildings mark the business district, while higher up, life slows—neighborhoods spill across the hills, their rooftops framing the snow-capped peak of Illimani in the distance.

Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century as a stop on the road to Potosí’s silver mines, La Paz still carries the weight of its past. Colonial facades stand beside modern offices, and indigenous markets hum just blocks from quiet cafés. On Murillo Square, protests flare up without warning, while on Sundays, church organs fill the air with music. The city moves to its own rhythm, unhurried and unpredictable.

There’s no stillness here. The streets pulse with people, and getting around is an experience in itself. Locals ride the cable cars not for the view, but to reach work on time. Minibuses and taxis weave through narrow roads, their routes shifting on a whim, stops announced by a wave or a shout. The chaos isn’t a flaw—it’s part of the city’s charm. La Paz doesn’t perform for visitors; it simply exists, loud and alive.

In the heart of the old city, the Witches’ Market draws those curious about tradition. Stalls overflow with dried herbs, charms for luck, and remedies for ailments. Vendors in layered skirts explain the uses of each item, their voices blending with the scent of spices and burning copal. Nearby, the 18th-century San Francisco Church offers a quiet contrast—its stone facade carved with saints and flowers, its interior cool and dim.

From here, travelers set off for Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake, or the otherworldly landscapes of Death Valley. But La Paz itself holds plenty. The Sopocachi district dazzles with street art, its murals splashed across crumbling walls. At night, the cable cars glide over a sea of lights, the city sprawling below like a constellation. La Paz isn’t just a place—it’s a world with its own rules, where time feels fluid. It doesn’t rush, but it never lets you grow bored.
