Sonargaon is where medieval Bengal lingers. A drive from Dhaka takes you to what was once the capital of an independent sultanate. Old brick walls line narrow lanes, and crumbling palaces stand beside mosques with domes and minarets rising above greenery. The pace here is slow, the way locals live much the same as their ancestors did.

The Pancharatna Mandir, a 16th-century Hindu temple, sits at the center. Its name refers to the five towers that once had gold leaf. Now, the carvings on its weathered stone remain, and a small pond nearby is where women bathe in the mornings and children play.

The Folk Heritage Museum shows how people lived here centuries ago. Exhibits include old looms, clay pots, and handmade jewelry. The museum also covers Sonargaon’s muslin industry—fabric so fine it was valued in Europe. Some weavers still use these techniques, and you can buy their silk and cotton pieces in the markets.

Water defines Sonargaon. The Meghna River flows along one side, while canals and lakes spread across the land. Boats are the usual transport, and fishing is common. In the evenings, families cook fresh fish on the riverbanks, smoke rising with the sound of conversation. During the monsoon, water levels rise so high that boats pass by house windows.

Sonargaon hasn’t changed for tourists. There are no souvenir shops or cafes, just quiet streets that empty at night. The people are friendly but leave you to explore. If you want a place where the past feels present, this is it.
