Sarandë
Sarandë stands where southern Albania’s mountains meet the Ionian Sea. The land doesn’t so much end as tilt into the water, as if the earth itself has been worn smooth by the waves.

The town begins at the waterfront. The promenade curves along the shore, shaded by palms and eucalyptus. In the evenings, the air carries the scent of salt and grilled fish, and voices drift from open-air cafés. The old quarter climbs the hillside in narrow, winding streets. Pastel houses with peeling shutters lean together, their courtyards still home to pomegranate and fig trees. Laundry dries on lines strung between balconies. Men sip coffee at small tables. Vendors haggle over the day’s catch at the market. The rhythm here feels untouched—not because it’s frozen in time, but because it never needed to change.

The water is clear enough to startle. Near the shore, it’s turquoise; farther out, it deepens to blue. The beaches mix sand and pebbles, warm underfoot. The promenade’s stretch is the busiest, but walk a little farther, and you’ll find coves where the only sound is waves against stone. Fish dart between rocks just below the surface. Summer heat lingers, tempered by the breeze. In the off-season, the town empties, leaving the sea and mountains to those who prefer quiet.

The hills rise beyond the town, layered with olive groves and vineyards. Narrow roads wind through them, turning every drive into a slow discovery. The countryside holds history, most notably Butrint. Its ruins—a UNESCO site—layer Greek temples, Roman baths, and Byzantine churches in the undergrowth. You can take a bus or taxi, but a car lets you stop where the road suddenly opens to a view.

This isn’t a place for shopping or nightlife. No malls, no clubs—just tavernas where the day’s catch grills over open flames. Family-run guesthouses overlook the water, their balconies catching the last light. The days move at their own pace. Sarandë doesn’t perform for visitors. It exists, sunlit and salt-worn, letting the sea set the tone.
