Hobart sits where the Southern Ocean meets the mountains. The Derwent River curls around the city, carrying salt and eucalyptus. Colonial buildings line the streets, pubs play live music, and fish markets sell oysters straight from the boats. There are no crowds here—just space, light, and time.

History in the streets
Founded in 1803 as a British penal colony, Hobart is Australia’s second-oldest city. Convicts and gold prospectors walked these streets, and their stories linger in the sandstone warehouses of Salamanca Place. Now, those buildings hold galleries, bookshops, and cafés. On Saturdays, the market fills the square with coffee, cheese, and the smell of the sea.

Walk up the hill to kunanyi / Mount Wellington. From the summit, the view stretches across Storm Bay to Bruny Island.

Wildness at the doorstep
Ferries leave for Maria Island, where cliffs drop into the sea and forests hide rare birds. On the Tasman Peninsula, the Three Capes Track winds past sea caves and dolphin pods. Closer to town, Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary keeps Tasmanian devils, wombats, and kangaroos. At dusk, little penguins waddle ashore at Bruny Island’s Neck.

Even in the city, nature isn’t scenery—it’s part of life. Ducks cross lawns in Battery Point. In winter, whales pass the shore.

Life at the edge
The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) collects contemporary and ancient works under one roof. Every June, Dark Mofo festival turns the city into a stage for art, music, and fire.

Locals live here because it’s quiet, because the air is clean, because the map feels like it’s just beginning. You can wander narrow streets for hours or sit by the water and watch the sunset turn the bay gold.
