Avignon
Avignon feels like a place where time has paused, but not in the way of a preserved relic—it’s alive, breathing history into the everyday. The past isn’t locked behind glass here; it lingers in the way locals haggle over fresh produce at the morning market, in the scent of buttery croissants drifting from corner bakeries, and in the soft glow of streetlamps that flicker to life as dusk settles over the squares. The city doesn’t demand attention, yet its stories unfold effortlessly: in the shadow of the Palais des Papes, where the weight of medieval power still hangs in the air, or along the broken arches of the Pont Saint-Bénézet, where the Rhône flows as it has for centuries.

For nearly seventy years in the 14th century, Avignon was the seat of the Catholic Church. The popes, fleeing Rome, made this city their stronghold, and the Palais des Papes—a fortress of faith—shaped kingdoms and alliances. Its walls, thick enough to withstand sieges, once guarded holy relics. Now, the palace welcomes visitors into its grand halls, where faded frescoes and tapestries show the splendor of the papal court.

The Rhône has always been Avignon’s lifeline. The Pont Saint-Bénézet, better known as the Avignon Bridge, is one of France’s most iconic landmarks, though today only four of its original arches remain. Legend claims a shepherd named Bénézet built it after an angel’s vision, but the bridge was a strategic prize, fought over for its control of trade. Now, it’s a place to watch the river’s currents, especially at sunset, when the light turns the water gold.

Every July, Avignon becomes Europe’s theatrical capital. The Avignon Festival, founded in 1947, draws artists and audiences from across the globe. Performances take place in courtyards, abandoned churches, and public squares. Even if you don’t love theater, you’ll feel the energy—strangers talk over wine at outdoor cafés, and the city itself becomes part of the show.

Life in Avignon moves slowly. The cobbled streets of the old town wind past shaded plazas where locals sip espresso under plane trees. In the evenings, people gather by the fountains, laughter mixing with the murmur of the Rhône.

Maybe that’s why the city feels so magnetic—it lets you step out of time. You can linger in the warmth of a Provençal afternoon or watch the light change over the rooftops without thinking of what comes next.
