Anapa in the Velvet Season: Action Plan for September and October

You are standing on the balcony of a rented apartment, holding a phone with an open vacation calendar in your hands and seeing that August is either unavailable price-wise or simply occupied with work. September remains. Or even October.

A question immediately arises in your head: will it be too cold, will everything interesting close, and is it worth spending money on a trip at all when schools start the academic year.

This text will not persuade you that this is the best time of year. There are no calls to book right now. There are only facts about how the city lives in these months, what works, and what freezes, and how to occupy yourself if you still came.

The first thing you will encounter is light. The sun in September stands lower than in summer. Shadows become longer by four o'clock.

This changes the rhythm of walks. If in July you hid from the heat indoors until evening, now daytime is used fully.

Morning starts earlier, because it gets dark earlier too. By six in the evening the sky may already be darkening, especially in October. This dictates day planning conditions. Excursions need to be scheduled for the first half, otherwise you risk returning to the hotel in twilight.

Water in the sea cools slowly. The Black Sea has great inertia. In early September water temperature often matches August's. The difference becomes noticeable closer to the end of the month.

In October swimming turns into a lottery. Depends on what wind blew the last three days. If stormy — water mixed, became cold. If calm — top layer heated.

You can swim, but need to get out on shore immediately, so as not to freeze. Wind strengthens at this time of year. This is not the light breeze that was in July. Gusts can be strong, especially on open coastal areas. Therefore headwear may be needed even during the day, so as not to get chilled.

People become fewer. This is not just a feeling, this is physical space. Beaches, where in August you couldn't lay a towel, are now free.

First rows near water may be empty, because water no longer seems as warm as before. The main mass of swimmers shifts closer to breakwaters or goes into protected bays.

If you like silence, this time suits. If you are used to beach infrastructure in the form of a working bar every five meters and music, you may be disappointed. Some spots close immediately after September 1. Tenants understand that tourist flow decreases, and wind up the season.

Ancient Gorgippia and Museum

When weather spoils or sun hides behind clouds, need a place where you can spend time dry and with benefit. Gorgippia is located in the city center. These are excavations of an ancient city.

You walk among stones, see foundations of houses, streets that existed two thousand years ago. There are no reconstructions in the form of plastic figures here, these are real ruins. Walk takes about an hour, if reading information plates. For a person interested in history, this is an opportunity to see the structure of an ancient settlement.

Nearby is Anapa Archaeological Museum. It is located in a separate building. Inside stores finds from excavation territory and surroundings. Ceramics, amphorae, jewelry, household items. Exposition built chronologically.

You can trace how technologies of making pottery or weapons changed. Museum is small, but dense in content. Here you can shelter from rain. In September there are still many visitors here, in October flow drops, and you get an opportunity to examine exhibits without crowd at showcases.

Combining visit to ruins and museum is logical. They are located nearby. After inspection you can go out on street and evaluate scale of city that was here. Now this is a residential district, but under asphalt and foundations of modern houses lies ancient structure. This changes perception of space.

You walk on an ordinary street, but know that under feet is ancient paving. For children this may be boring, if not prepare them in advance. Tell them people lived here who didn't know electricity and cars. Turn walk into search for details: where was oven, where stored wine. Without such preparation child will just see a pile of stones.

Utrish Reserve

Trip to Utrish requires a separate day. This is not beach rest in usual understanding. This is an exit into nature. Road to reserve takes time.

Need to consider that transport runs on schedule, which in autumn season may be reduced. Better clarify actual routes at bus station before departure. Reserve itself known for juniper forests. Air here is different. Mix of pine and sea gives specific smell, which remains on clothes.

Trails in Utrish are different. There are equipped paths, there are wild areas. In September walking is comfortable, no exhausting heat. In October need to check forecast. If rain passed, trail may become slippery. Shoes must be appropriate. Sneakers with good tread better than flip-flops.

On territory there is a dolphinarium, but its work in velvet season is not guaranteed. Often season of shows ends in late August. Worth checking information before trip, so as not to go for a show that is no longer running.

Beaches in Utrish are wild. Infrastructure minimum. Toilets and changing cabins may be closed or work intermittently. Water and food better take with you. Shops along way are few.

If you go with children, consider that they may get bored without animation and water slide. Here nature itself is entertainment. Can search for fossils in stones, observe lizards, look at sea from height. Water here often clearer than in city, because less runoff and boat traffic. For snorkeling with mask this place suits better than city beach.

Return road may take more time due to flow of cars returning to city. On weekends September still considered season, so jams possible. In October traffic rarer. Plan return so as not to stand in dark on serpentine. Lights on roads exist, but extra caution won't hurt.

City Walks: Park, Lighthouse, Pier

Evening promenade is popular. In September it acquires a different shade. Lenin Park of Culture and Recreation works. Attractions may function until end of warm days. Ferris wheel gives view of city and sea. In clear weather visible far. In cloudy — only gray mass of water. Tickets sold at cashiers on site. Queues in September short. You can rise without waiting.

From park convenient to walk to embankment. Here is Breakwater (Anapa Pier). This is a concrete structure going into sea. People walk on it. In stormy weather waves hit concrete, spray flies high. Standing at edge dangerous, can get completely wet. In calm weather locals fish here. Tourists take photos. View from pier opens coastline. You see where construction ends and beaches begin. In evening lighting turns on. It is not bright, but highlights contours.

Not far from pier is located Anapa Lighthouse. It is active. Territory around is guarded. Inside cannot enter, this is a regime object. But outside it is well visible. It stands on an elevation. White body color contrasts with blue sky. Around lighthouse often photographed. This is a recognizable object. Nearby there is a square. Cannons installed there. These are decorative elements, reminding of military past of fortress. Children like climbing on them. In October wind here stronger than in city, because no protection by houses. Jacket better zipped.

Central Market: Food and Souvenirs

Anapa Central Market in September works at full force. This is harvest time. Grapes, figs, peaches, nuts. Prices may be lower than in August, because sellers need to sell goods before end of season. But this is not a rule. All depends on harvest of specific year. Walk market better in morning. At this time goods fresh. By evening leftovers may be less quality.

Here you can buy local wine. But need to be attentive. Draft wine in plastic bottles — this is a lottery. It may sour on road. Better take factory bottles with labels. If taking draft, taste before buying. Taste must be clean, without acid. Dried fruits and nuts sold by weight. Can bargain. This is accepted. Ask price per kilogram, but buy less to check quality. Often sell old goods as new. Fresh nut must crunch, not be limp.

Fish and seafood presented in dried and smoked form. Pikeperch, bream, flounder. Check expiry date. In warm weather September products spoil fast. If taking home, pack in vacuum or dense paper. Spices and adjika also popular. Taste before buying. Spiciness varies. What is normal for local resident, for tourist may be too spicy. Market noisy. Wallets and phones keep in closed pockets. Crowd creates opportunities for pickpockets, as in any large place of people accumulation.

Saint Onuphrius Church

If you need a quiet place, where there is no music and sellers, enter church. Saint Onuphrius Church is located in city. Architecture traditional for Orthodox churches. Domes, crosses, whitewashed walls. Inside can put a candle. Here quiet. People speak in whisper. This is a place for pause. When tired from noise of embankment and market, here can sit ten minutes. Entry free. Need to observe dress code: closed shoulders for women, headwear. For men headwear removed.

Around church there is territory. Can walk. Flower beds in September still bloom. Autumn does not immediately enter rights. Trees still green. Yellow leaves appear closer to November. Church active, services held. Schedule hangs on door. If catch service, need to stand quiet, not walk hall. This place not tourist in full sense, rather city. Local residents come here regularly.

What Not to Do in Velvet Season

Not worth planning visit to water parks in late October. Season of work limited by weather. Water in pools not heated to comfortable temperature for long stay. You risk freezing. Better check park site before buying ticket. Often they close end of September.

Not worth counting on night life. Clubs and discos that worked in July, close or switch to weekend mode. Public little. Music may be quiet. If you go for parties, this period not suitable. You will be bored.

Not worth buying summer clothes with you. T-shirts and shorts needed only for first days. In evening already need sweater. In October may need windbreaker or light jacket. Nights become cold. Air conditioners in hotels may already not work or be turned off for unnecessary. Clarify this moment when booking. Open window at night may lead to cold.

Opinion: Who This Time Suits

If going with schoolchildren — skip this point, they are already studying. If children preschoolers — can go in September. Water still warm, sun much. But need to be ready that entertainment less. Animation in hotels reduces. If you go as a couple or alone — time excellent. Can walk long, not tiring from heat. Can read book on beach, not burning. Housing prices drop. Can find good option cheaper than peak.

My personal opinion: October suits only those who like to walk, not swim. If your goal — sea, choose first half of September. If goal — change of setting and walks — end of October also suits. But need to understand that city prepares for winter. Some cafes close for repair. Remove summer verandas. City becomes more home, less resort.

Clothes and Packing

Pack suitcase by layer principle. T-shirt, shirt, sweater, windbreaker. So you can adapt to temperature changes during day. In morning may be cool, day hot, evening cold again. Shoes: comfortable sneakers for walks and flip-flops for beach. If plan trips to mountains or Utrish, sneakers mandatory. Headwear needed even in October. Sun active.

First aid kit must contain cold remedies. Temperature drop between day and night, wind from sea may cause symptoms. Plasters for feet needed, if walk much. Sunscreen do not remove. Burns happen even in September, because you don't feel heat as strongly as in August, but ultraviolet works.

Transport and Logistics

Reach Anapa by plane or train. Airport works. Flights may be less than summer. Tickets need to look ahead. Train goes longer, but cheaper. Inside city marshrutkas and taxi work. Taxi in season costs more, in velvet season prices return to norm. Marshrutkas run on main directions. Schedule may be rarer. Stop on demand. Need to wave hand.

Car rental gives freedom. Can go to Utrish or neighboring villages anytime. But roads in mountains narrow. Parkings at beaches in September may still be occupied. In October places more. Gas better refuel at network stations. Fuel quality at small stations may differ.

Housing: Autumn Nuances

Hotels and guest houses lower prices. This is a fact. But need to ask about heating. End of October nights cold. If room no heater, sleep will be uncomfortable. Air conditioners on heating work not all. Clarify this moment at check-in. Hot water may supply on schedule in some private sectors. In hotels usually uninterrupted. Breakfasts in hotels may be simplified. Less fruit, less choice. This is owners economy.

Private sector freed. Owners more agreeable. Can bargain for long rent. But conditions may be simpler. Cleaning rarer. Bed linen change on demand. Read reviews for past year. There often write about real conditions heating and water.

Safety and Health

Jellyfish in September still meet. They smaller than summer, but sting. If see in water — don't touch. On shore may lie thrown seaweed. They slippery. Don't step barefoot. Glass and stones may be in sand. Better enter water in shoes. This will save feet from cuts.

Ticks in autumn period less active, but in forest Utrish risk exists. Clothes with long sleeve reduces bite probability. Inspect yourself after walks on grass. In city water from tap technical. Drink need bottled. In stores choice big. Prices not differ from average region.

Connection works stable. Internet fast in center. In remote places Utrish may be interruptions. Download maps offline before trip. Navigator may lose signal in mountains. Paper map also won't be superfluous. Terminals for card payment exist everywhere. Cash needed for market and small shops.

Planning

Do not try to embrace the unembraceable. Choose three main places you want to see. For example, Gorgippia, Utrish and market. Rest — by mood. If tired — stay in hotel. Vacation needed for rest, not for checkbox. Weather may interfere with plans. Rain in September possible. Have Plan B: cinema, cafe, museum.

Evening city in October quiet. Lights burn. Sea noises. If you sit on bench at embankment and listen to waves, you get what you came for. Calm. Absence of fuss. Opportunity to think your thoughts without constant noise of crowd. This is main value of velvet season. Not quantity of visited places, but quality of time.

Packing things, check chargers. Sockets standard. Voltage stable. Powerbank needed, if photograph much. Cold discharges battery faster. Keep phone in inner pocket of jacket. So it will save heat and charge.

If you fly with transfer, lay time for connection. In autumn fogs possible. Flights may delay. Insurance must cover flight cancellation. This is a trifle that saves nerves. Documents check before leaving home. Passport, tickets, booking. In hustle of collections something may stay on table.
