Ibn Abbas Park

Ibn Abbas Park

Ibn Abbas Park is one of the few green spaces in Nouakchott. Here, you can escape the heat and bustle of Mauritania’s capital. It’s not a place of manicured gardens or rare plants—just shade, benches, and space to walk. For a city where greenery is rare, this park offers a patch of coolness and quiet.

The park appeared in the 1970s, when Nouakchott grew quickly after becoming the capital in the mid-20th century. There were no parks then, and the desert kept moving closer. Named after a Mauritanian scholar and poet, Ibn Abbas Park became a place to rest, talk, read, or think.

The design is simple. A small fountain sits in the center, though it rarely works in the heat. Around it, acacia and palm trees planted decades ago provide shade for benches or slow walks. The trees aren’t tall, but their canopies block the sun. In the evenings, lampposts light up, and the park fills with families, teenagers, and older residents.

Mornings are quiet—most people are at work or school. By late afternoon, the park wakes up. Some bring books, others just walk. A few spread picnics on the grass. On weekends, young people play soccer on a dirt patch, and children run between the trees. The city’s noise fades, leaving only the sound of leaves and quiet voices.

This isn’t a park with rides, cafes, or bright flowerbeds. That’s part of why it works. It fits Nouakchott’s slow pace—people come to sit, not to post photos or seek entertainment.

For locals, the park is part of daily life. Some visit every evening after work. Others come once a week to meet friends. There’s no loud music or crowds—just quiet conversation and slow walks. It feels like Mauritanian culture, where small pleasures matter more than noise.

Nouakchott is changing—new roads, neighborhoods, and shops are everywhere. But Ibn Abbas Park stays the same: a small green spot in a growing city. Maybe that’s why people keep coming back. The trees still shade the benches, and the quiet remains.
