Weather overview

Улгий sits in the Altai Mountains, where the climate is sharply continental with long, frigid winters and short, mild summers. From November to March, temperatures stay well below freezing, often dropping to -20 °C or lower at night. The coldest months are January and December, when daytime highs barely reach -10 °C.

Summer in Улгий is brief but pleasant, spanning June to August, with daytime temperatures hovering around +20...+23 °C. Nights remain cool, especially in June and September, when lows can dip to +4...+9 °C. The shoulder months—April, May, and October—bring rapid transitions, with April still chilly and October already feeling like early winter.

Temperature

Winter in Улгий is severe, with January averaging -17.5 °C and nighttime lows plunging to -20.9 °C. Even in March, temperatures struggle to rise above freezing, lingering around -2.9 °C. By April, the thaw begins, though nights can still drop below zero until mid-spring.

The warmest period arrives in July, when Улгий sees daytime highs of +23.6 °C and averages +17.9 °C for the month. However, the warmth is fleeting: by September, temperatures drop to +10.6 °C, and October brings the first frosts, with highs of just +7 °C. The shift from summer to winter happens quickly here.

Precipitation

Улгий is one of Mongolia’s driest regions, with most of the year seeing almost no rainfall. The winter months—November through March—are particularly arid, with precipitation barely registering above 0.5 mm. Even in April and October, moisture remains scarce, making snow or rain rare.

The only notable wet period occurs in July and August, when Улгий receives around 47–48 mm of rain per month. These are the only months where precipitation exceeds 20 mm, offering a brief respite from the otherwise dry climate. By September, the rains taper off sharply, returning to near-desert conditions.

What to pack

For a winter trip to Улгий, thermal layers are essential. Pack a heavy down jacket, insulated boots, gloves, and a hat to handle temperatures as low as -20 °C. Even in March or November, expect freezing conditions, so windproof outerwear is a must.

Summer visitors to Улгий should bring light, breathable clothing for daytime, but also a warm layer for cool evenings. A fleece or light jacket will be useful in June and September, when nights can feel chilly. Since rain is rare, waterproof gear isn’t a priority, but a compact umbrella might help during the brief July–August showers.

For spring or autumn travel, layering is key. In April or October, temperatures swing between freezing nights and mild days, so pack a mix of warm sweaters, a windbreaker, and sturdy footwear. Sunglasses and sunscreen are useful year-round, as the high-altitude sun is strong even in winter.
