Paola
Paola rarely appears in guidebooks, yet it offers more than well-trodden tourist trails. A few kilometers from Valletta, this town sits at Malta’s heart, reflecting the island’s daily rhythm. Narrow streets wind past tightly packed houses, where life moves at a Mediterranean pace. The central square is where locals gather for coffee or a game of bridge. Conversations blend with the hum of daily life. Time slows here, and that’s why it stands out.

A history carved in stone
The Knights Hospitaller founded Paola in the 17th century, naming it after Grand Master Antoine de Paule. Yet its most remarkable landmark predates them: the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum. This UNESCO-listed underground temple was carved into limestone over five thousand years ago. Descending into its three levels of chambers reveals dimly lit corridors, niches, and altars linked to ancient rituals. A nearby museum displays artifacts from the site, including the "Sleeping Lady" figurine.

The Hypogeum closes at 4 p.m., so plan ahead.

Where old and new meet
On the outskirts, Paola Square shopping center draws crowds from across Malta. It has high-street brands, cinemas, and cafés. Yet when the mall closes, the town returns to its quiet rhythm. Evenings bring the scent of Maltese cooking from open windows. Bars serve rabbit ravioli and local wine. Modernity and tradition exist side by side here.

A town that keeps Malta moving
The Hibernians Ground stadium hosts football matches and concerts. The baroque parish church of St. Ubaldus holds an icon of the Virgin Mary, attracting pilgrims. Perched on a hill, the church overlooks olive groves, fields, and the distant sea. It’s a scene that feels unhurried and untouched.

Why come here?
This isn’t a place for postcard-perfect moments. Paola is for those who want to see Malta as it is. Walk the narrow streets. Stop at a bakery for fresh bread or a shop for local cheese. Sit on a bench and watch life pass by. If you visit in summer, you might catch a festa—streets lit up, processions, fireworks. In those moments, the town reveals its quiet magic.
