Cali
Cali moves to a rhythm you can feel before you even hear it. There’s no grand colonial architecture here like in Cartagena, no museum-lined streets like Bogotá—just the pulse of a city that refuses to stand still. It sprawls across a valley between the Andes and the Pacific, where the heat of the day softens into breezes by evening, and life unfolds at its own unhurried pace. This is salsa’s capital, not as a tourist gimmick, but as a way of being. The music spills from open doorways, street corners, and dimly lit clubs where couples spin until dawn, their steps as natural as breathing. You don’t visit Cali to check off landmarks; you come to let the city’s energy seep into your bones.

It wasn’t always a place travelers sought out. For years, Cali carried a reputation that kept people away, but that’s not the city you’ll find today. There are still neighborhoods best avoided, but the center and areas where tourists go have shed much of that old tension. Locals have learned to live without looking over their shoulders, and the city has reclaimed its identity—one that’s unpolished and entirely its own. Unlike Medellín, where foreigners cluster in expat-friendly pockets, Cali remains stubbornly itself. There’s no glossy veneer, no scripted charm. What you see is what you get, and that’s precisely why it lingers in your memory.

The heart of the city beats in Plaza de San Antonio, where a whitewashed church stands beneath the shade of ancient trees. By evening, the square fills with musicians tuning their instruments and dancers stretching before the first notes even begin. From here, you can wander down Carrera Séptima, a pedestrian street lined with vendors selling ripe mangoes, grilled corn slathered in cheese, and sticky-sweet treats wrapped in banana leaves. Or you might duck into a bar where the air hums with conversation, the clink of glasses, and the occasional burst of laughter.

Cali doesn’t try to impress. It doesn’t need to. The magic lies in its unscripted moments—a game of dominoes unfolding in a sunlit courtyard, an impromptu concert erupting behind a market stall, the way strangers will pull you into a dance before you’ve even realized the music’s changed.

Beyond the city limits, the landscape shifts dramatically. Within an hour, you can trade pavement for mountain trails where monkeys chatter in the trees and birds flash colors you didn’t know existed. Closer to the Pacific, wild beaches stretch untouched by mass tourism, their black sand meeting waves that crash with untamed force. But you don’t have to leave the city to find green escapes. Parque de la Hoya fills with families on weekends, their picnic blankets spread beneath the trees, while the botanical garden offers a quiet refuge of orchids and butterflies.

Locals will tell you Cali isn’t perfect, and they’re right. But that’s part of its appeal. There’s no need to plan every minute here. The city works best when you let it guide you—down a side street, into a crowded bar, or onto a dance floor where the music decides your next move.

Cali isn’t for those who want a flawless vacation. It’s for travelers who prefer their destinations messy, alive, and unapologetic. You won’t find polished tourist experiences or carefully curated itineraries. What you will find is a place that doesn’t just welcome you—it pulls you in, challenges you to keep up, and leaves you wondering why you ever thought you could resist its rhythm.
