Birżebbuġa Park

Birżebbuġa’s Quiet Shore

Valletta is a half-hour drive from here, but the usual tourist crowds thin out as you reach St. George’s Bay. The park along the shore doesn’t announce itself—just benches under trees, paths winding toward the water, and a view that changes with the light. In the morning, the bay glows silver; by noon, it’s a bright blue; by evening, the sky above it fades to rose and violet.

Children run to the swings and slides. Adults walk the gentle slopes or sit by the water with coffee or a book. On weekends, families spread blankets for picnics. On weekdays, the only sounds are waves and gulls.

This coast was once a fishing village, with a few houses and boats pulled onto the sand. In the late 1980s, the area was turned into a public space. Pine and eucalyptus trees, planted then, now shade the paths. Long before that, Phoenician and Roman settlements stood here—today, only a few plaques mark the spots.

The park’s design is simple. Walkways curve along the shore, wooden platforms extend over the water, and pavilions with terracotta roofs offer shelter. A low stone wall runs along the edge, worn by salt and time. In winter, waves crash over it, leaving the paths wet and shiny.

Locals use the park daily. Neighbors meet for conversations, runners train in the early hours, and dogs trot along the shore. In summer, festivals fill the air with music—like the annual fish festival, where laughter mixes with the sound of waves. Even then, the park never feels crowded. A short walk along the promenade or up a low hill brings quiet.

Winter transforms the place. Bare trees, sharp wind, and rain turn paths to mud. After storms, children collect shells and seaweed while parents sip tea from flasks. On gray days, the bay turns steely, and fishermen cast lines from the rocks.

The park doesn’t try to impress. It doesn’t need to. It offers the sound of waves, the scent of salt and pine, a bench to watch the light shift over the water. All it asks is that you slow down.

Walk through the park if you come to Birżebbuġa. Sit by the water. Watch the colors change. You might see a fishing boat or a family unpacking lunch. Or you might just listen to the waves.
