Thiès is one of those places in Senegal that most travelers overlook. It doesn’t have the beaches of Dakar or the wildlife reserves that draw visitors to the country’s more famous spots. Instead, it’s a quiet city where life follows its own rhythm.
The city sits on a plateau surrounded by low hills, its streets lined with flat-roofed houses. Mango trees cast long shadows over sidewalks where old men play checkers and children kick soccer balls between the roots. The air carries the scent of earth and woodsmoke, and the only sounds are the occasional taxi horn or the call to prayer from a nearby mosque.
Thiès was once a key stop on the railway connecting Dakar to the interior. Its train station still stands in the center of town, though the tracks see little traffic now. The markets around it remain busy. Stalls display fresh vegetables, spices, and bolts of brightly colored fabric. The batik workshops here stand out—artisans dye cloth in patterns using wax and natural dyes, a craft the region is known for. The work is done entirely by hand.
There’s no rush in Thiès. The city is small enough to walk across in an afternoon, but the real draw isn’t landmarks. It’s the everyday scenes: women carrying baskets to market, the midday quiet when the heat drives everyone indoors, the smell of *chebu jen* or *mafé* from open-air kitchens as evening falls. In the cafés, men drink mint tea, their conversations lasting for hours.
Beyond the city, the landscape turns to savanna with scattered baobabs. Cows and goats graze along the roadsides. Families sometimes gather by small ponds for picnics. A short drive away, the village of Ndiambour has potters and jewelers working with clay and beads, their workshops open to visitors. Occasionally, you might hear traditional *kora* music, the notes drifting through the evening air.
Thiès isn’t for those seeking grand adventures. There are no crowds, no souvenir sellers, no set itineraries. What you’ll find is a city that moves at its own pace. The people are warm, the hospitality real. If you want to see Senegal beyond the postcards, this is the place. Just don’t expect the day to hurry.
