Belgrade’s Old Town is the city’s oldest district, the place where the capital began. Perched on the bluffs where the Danube and Sava rivers meet, its cobblestone streets wind past buildings that have seen empires rise and fall. Ottoman minarets peek through later Austro-Hungarian facades, layers of history visible in the worn stone and peeling paint. Every corner holds traces of merchants, soldiers, and travelers who passed through over centuries—quiet courtyards and hidden alleys where their lives linger.

Walking here feels like moving through time. Republic Square, with its statue of Prince Mihailo, was once the center of trade and conversation; now it’s where locals and visitors gather, sipping coffee under plane trees that have stood for generations. Nearby, the National Museum displays medieval manuscripts and modern art. A short stroll away, Skadarlija’s taverns spill live music onto the streets, and the scent of Turkish coffee mixes with the evening air. Poets and revolutionaries once debated over rakija at these tables.

Old Town is where daily life happens. At Zeleni Venac market, vendors sell fresh produce, handmade cheeses, and spices, their voices warm enough to make bargaining feel like a conversation. Tiny shops offer hand-painted souvenirs and vinyl records, their owners ready to talk whether you buy or not. From Kalemegdan Fortress, the view stretches across the rivers’ confluence, where the skyline of New Belgrade meets the old rooftops.

The streets are loud, the sidewalks uneven. By evening, lights flicker on, and laughter fills the air. History isn’t something you read here—it’s in the worn doorways, the echo of footsteps, the way past and present blur together.
