Scallbia is one of those rare places where time seems to have paused, leaving behind the quiet rhythm of a Syria that has long since faded elsewhere. Tucked away in the country’s interior, it sits where ancient trade routes once connected Damascus to Aleppo and the Mediterranean coast. The streets, paved with worn stone, wind past low-slung houses of clay and mudbrick, their flat roofs used by neighbors who gather for strong coffee as the sun sets. Beyond the town, olive groves stretch toward the horizon, their silvery leaves moving in the breeze, while fields of wheat sway in the distance.

History lingers in Scallbia in the crumbling remains of a Byzantine-era fortress that overlooks the surrounding hills. The town was once a waypoint for merchants and travelers, a place where caravans rested before continuing their journey. Later, under Arab rule, it absorbed Islamic traditions while keeping its own character. The old mosque, with its weathered minaret, stands as a witness to centuries of change. Nearby, the ruins of the fortress offer a view of the valleys below, where markets once bustled with activity.

Daily life in Scallbia unfolds at its own pace, shaped by the seasons and the call of the muezzin. Mornings begin with the sound of the adhan drifting over the rooftops, followed by the slow stir of the town as shopkeepers set out their wares—fresh vegetables, spices, and rounds of flatbread still warm from the oven. The market is modest: copper pots hammered by local craftsmen, handwoven wool carpets, and jars of preserved lemons and olives. Food here is simple, built around dishes like fattoush, kibbeh, and pastries drizzled with honey and pistachios. Evenings belong to families, who gather for long dinners where conversation flows as freely as the tea.

Scallbia does not try to impress. There are no grand monuments or luxury hotels, no crowds of tourists. Instead, it offers a sense of Syria as it once was. The past and present blend here, so it can be hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Those who visit leave with the quiet warmth of its people, the scent of jasmine in the evening air, and the feeling of having glimpsed a way of life that has endured for generations.
