Oman’s coastline bends here, where the Arabian Sea carves into the land. Nazwa was once a crossroads for traders moving between Arabia, India, East Africa, and China. Walk its streets, and the past isn’t just remembered—it’s underfoot in the coral-stone houses, overhead in the wooden balconies, and around every corner in the quiet courtyards.

The harbor wakes before dawn. Wooden dhows, their hulls patched with generations of care, return with the night’s catch. Fishermen sort silver fish into baskets while the air fills with salt and the sharp tang of spices. Nearby, men mend nets or repair boats using tools their grandfathers would recognize. A five-minute walk inland brings you to the souk, where stalls sell frankincense, dates, and silver jewelry hammered into shape by local craftsmen. Sit down for coffee, and a vendor might tell you how his family traded these beads with Zanzibar a century ago.

The old town is a tangle of alleys where houses lean close enough to touch. Turn a corner, and you’ll find a courtyard cooled by a mango tree or a small mosque with a door worn smooth by decades of hands. The fort looms above it all, its walls built from stone and clay. Inside, cannons point toward the sea, underground wells hold rainwater from another era, and the old prison cells are empty now. From the top, the view stretches across the city and the bay—turquoise near the shore, deep blue farther out.

Nazwa doesn’t hurry. Spend a few days, and it will show you its rhythms. Wake early to watch the boats come in, or walk the beaches where the sand is fine as flour. At sunset, hire a boat and drift while the sky turns pink. Ask a local where to find the freshest tuna or how to brew coffee with cardamom, and they’ll tell you.
