Weather overview

Картаго sits in the highlands of Коста-Рика, where the climate stays mild year-round. The dry season, from January to April, brings the most stable weather, with warm days and cool nights. From May, the rains gradually increase, peaking in September and October, when afternoon showers become frequent.

Unlike the coastal regions, Картаго rarely feels oppressive. Even in the wetter months, mornings often start clear, leaving time to explore before the clouds build. The transition months—November and December—offer a mix of sunshine and brief rain, making them a quieter time to visit.

Temperature

Daytime temperatures in Картаго hover between +21 °C and +24 °C for most of the year, with the warmest period in March and April. Nights are cooler, dropping to around +14 °C in January and February, so a light jacket is useful after sunset.

The temperature shift between seasons is subtle. May and June see slightly higher averages at +19.4 °C and +18.8 °C, while December cools to +17.4 °C. Even in the rainiest months, the thermometer rarely dips below +15 °C, keeping evenings comfortable.

What to pack

For a trip to Картаго in January or February, pack layers: light clothing for daytime and a sweater for cooler evenings. A waterproof jacket is helpful even in the dry season, as unexpected showers can happen.

From May to November, prioritize rain gear. Quick-dry fabrics and waterproof footwear will keep you comfortable during afternoon rains. A hat and sunscreen are still useful, as mornings often stay sunny.

Year-round, Картаго’s mild temperatures mean you won’t need heavy winter clothing. A scarf or shawl is enough for the occasional chilly morning, while breathable fabrics work best for daytime exploration.
