Cuenca sits on a rocky plateau between two gorges carved by the Huécar and Júcar rivers. The city’s houses cling to cliff edges, as if shaped by the wind. The San Pablo Bridge, an iron structure suspended high above the gorge, connects the old town to a former monastery now used as a parador. From the bridge, you see swifts dart below while the river murmurs far beneath—time here feels stretched, the hours moving differently.

The old quarter is a maze of cobblestone streets that follow the land’s contours. There are no straight boulevards; the city grows naturally, shaped by the terrain. At its center stands the cathedral, built over centuries in Gothic and Romanesque styles. Inside, stained glass colors the choir stalls, and a crucifix attributed to El Greco hangs in a chapel. Nearby, Plaza Mayor fills with life—farmers selling produce in the morning, locals drinking wine in the evening, the sound of footsteps on stone mixing with the clink of glasses.

Cuenca’s museums feel like experiences. The Museum of Abstract Art occupies the Casas Colgadas, houses that overhang the gorge. Paintings and sculptures interact with the space beyond their walls, featuring mid-20th-century Spanish artists. The Science Museum turns learning into play with hands-on experiments and a planetarium. Here, even complex ideas become clear, as if the city itself encourages questions.

Outside the historic center, natural parks offer reasons to explore. The Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park has pine forests, waterfalls, and limestone caves. Nearby, a ski resort attracts winter visitors. Beyond the city, traces of history remain—a Roman aqueduct, medieval castles on distant hills. But what stays with you is the pace. There are no crowds, no rushing tour groups. Evenings happen on quiet terraces where cheese and ham are shared, and conversations with shopkeepers feel like invitations. In Cuenca, time is measured by the shifting shadows on the cliffs.
