Weather overview

The weather in Багдад is defined by two distinct seasons: a long, scorching summer and a mild, short winter. From November to March, the city enjoys cooler temperatures, making it the most comfortable time to explore. In contrast, April through October brings intense heat, with daytime highs often exceeding +40 °C.

Багдад sees very little rainfall, with most precipitation occurring between November and March. The rest of the year is almost entirely dry, so visitors should prepare for arid conditions. If you prefer avoiding extreme heat, plan your trip for the cooler months when the city is more pleasant for sightseeing.

Precipitation

Багдад is one of the driest major cities in the world, with an annual rainfall of just 142 mm. Most of this falls between November and March, with January and December being the wettest months at around 24–27 mm. The rest of the year is virtually rain-free, particularly from June to September.

When rain does occur in Багдад, it tends to be light and brief, though occasional downpours can happen in March or November. Travelers visiting during the wetter months should carry a light jacket, but heavy rain gear is rarely necessary. The dry heat of summer means dust storms can occasionally arise, so a scarf or mask may be useful.

What to pack

For a trip to Багдад in winter (December to February), pack layers for cool mornings and evenings, with temperatures ranging from +5.6 °C to +19.5 °C. A light jacket or sweater will suffice, along with comfortable walking shoes for exploring the city’s historic sites.

Visiting Багдад in summer (June to August) requires preparation for extreme heat. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in breathable fabrics is essential, along with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. Staying hydrated is critical, so carry a reusable water bottle. If you’re sensitive to heat, consider scheduling outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon.

During the transitional months of March to May and September to November, Багдад’s weather is more moderate. Pack a mix of short-sleeve shirts and light layers for cooler evenings. A scarf can be handy for dust or occasional breezes, while comfortable sandals or shoes will keep you moving through the city’s bustling streets.
