Hann Park

Hann Park

Hann Park is a quiet corner of Dakar. People come here for stillness, not spectacle. It sits in the Kwakam district, on the edge of the capital. Locals use it to escape the heat and noise. There are no tourists, no attractions—just paths under trees, ponds with water lilies, and benches.

You can sit with a book or watch the park’s slow pace.

The park began in the early 20th century as a botanical garden. Dakar was then the administrative center of French West Africa. Plants were grown for study and to add greenery to the city. Some of the original trees and shrubs remain, brought from across Africa. A few are over a hundred years old.

The layout is simple. Small bridges cross the ponds. Stone paths lead to tall palms. Pavilions offer shade. At the center stands a greenhouse-like building. It now holds a natural history museum. The exhibits cover Senegal’s flora and fauna. If you’re curious about local ecosystems, it’s worth a look.

The zoo inside the park attracts families. It opened in the mid-20th century. Monkeys, crocodiles, and birds live here. There are a few lions, but they’re old. The enclosures are basic. For many Dakar residents, this is their only chance to see these animals.

Local artists sometimes display their work in the park. On weekends, you might find a small concert or a craft workshop. School groups visit for field trips. Young people picnic on the grass. The mood is relaxed—no one is trying to impress anyone.

If you’re used to Dakar’s markets or beaches, Hann Park might seem plain. There are no signs or performances. But that’s why it works. It’s a place to experience the city’s daily life without distractions. In the morning, birds sing. By afternoon, children play. In the evening, locals jog or meet friends as the light fades.

The park has problems. Lack of funding has left paths cracked and enclosures in need of repair. Some areas are overgrown. Benches have peeling paint. Ponds are choked with weeds. Yet it still offers something rare: a green, quiet space in the middle of the city.
