Haeju
Haeju is a place where time moves with the seasons. The streets are narrow, lined with low-slung houses under tiled roofs, their colors faded by sun and rain. Cars are rare; bicycles and the occasional truck pass slowly. The city doesn’t try to impress. Instead, it offers the quiet rhythm of daily life.

Its location near the border with South Korea shaped its past. Once a trade hub, it connected the peninsula, its warehouses and docks busy. Now, those warehouses stand empty by the river, their wooden beams weathered. The docks sink into the water. Markets remain, small and quiet, selling dried fish, fresh vegetables, and handmade goods. Beyond the city, Buddhist temples like Pongungsa, built over a thousand years ago, stand with worn stone carvings and overgrown courtyards.

Life in Haeju moves slowly.

Mornings begin with steaming bowls of rice and soup. The scent of garlic and sesame oil drifts through the streets. By evening, families walk along the riverbank or gather in small parks. Children play under the watch of grandparents. People are polite but reserved, especially around foreigners. There are no luxury hotels—just modest guesthouses with plain but good food. The seafood, caught fresh from the Yellow Sea, is worth trying: grilled fish, spicy shrimp stew, or seaweed wrapped around rice.

The landscape around Haeju is gentle. Low mountains rise in the distance, their slopes covered in forests. In spring, wildflowers dot the hillsides. In autumn, trees blaze with red and gold. Nearby, hot springs bubble up, drawing locals to soak. The weather swings between extremes—hot summers, cold winters—but spring and fall are best. The air is crisp, the light soft. Walking the trails or sitting by the river feels like stepping into a quieter world.

Haeju doesn’t put on a show. There are no towering statues or slogans, just daily life. It’s for those who want to see North Korea away from the capital. The city offers no spectacle, but it does offer something else: a glimpse of ordinary existence. Here, time moves differently. Food, family, the changing seasons—these still matter most.
