Uralsk
Uralsk is a city where Europe and Asia don’t just meet on a map—they blend into everyday life. It sits on the banks of the Ural River, the natural dividing line between two continents. Cross the bridge, and you’ve stepped into a different part of the world. The city doesn’t announce its geography, but you feel it in the architecture, the street names, the way people describe themselves. Are they Kazakh, Russian, or simply Uralsk locals? For them, these distinctions have long been part of the rhythm of life.

The city’s history begins with a Cossack fortress founded in the mid-18th century, a remote outpost of the Russian Empire. The Cossacks brought their traditions, their dialect, their love of independence, and these traces remain in the city’s character. The old quarters, with their single-story houses under corrugated iron roofs and narrow streets where the occasional cart still creaks by, are a natural part of urban life. Cossack holidays are still celebrated here, and in the central square stands a monument to Yemelyan Pugachev, who once stormed these lands.

Modern Uralsk has its own pace. There’s no big-city rush, just the rhythm of provincial life. This is a city for slow walks—stopping at a small café for homemade pastries, sitting by the riverbank watching the water drift by, or wandering through the market where local beekeepers sell honey and dried fruits from Kazakhstan’s southern regions. In summer, bicycles fill the streets, children play soccer on dusty lots, and in the evenings, groups gather by the water with guitars.

The Ural River is the city’s soul. In spring, when the river swells, water laps at the edges of houses, turning Uralsk into a temporary riverside village where boats become the main transport. By summer, the river calms, and its banks fill with fishermen casting for pike, zander, and bream. Locals insist the fish here is the best in Kazakhstan, and it’s hard to argue after tasting it in one of the riverside restaurants, where old recipes are still followed. In winter, the river freezes, and ice fishermen set up their tents while children skate on the surface.

Uralsk doesn’t try to impress. There are no crowds of foreigners, just an authenticity that seeps into every corner. Spend a few days here, and you’ll keep discovering something new—a hidden church in a back alley, a workshop where traditional Cossack sabers are made, or a conversation with a local who shares a story you won’t find in any guidebook. The city moves to its own rhythm, and maybe that’s why it lingers in your memory long after you’ve left.
