Tunja rarely appears on postcards or in travel brochures. It doesn’t demand attention with neon signs or crowded plazas, and you won’t see lines forming at its landmarks. The city moves slowly, as it has for decades—time here feels deliberate, unrushed.

At nearly 3,000 meters above sea level, Tunja sits high in the Andes. The air is crisp, the sunlight bright, and the shadows of colonial buildings stretch sharply across cobblestone streets. Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, the city’s old quarter preserves its past in stone. Narrow alleys wind past whitewashed churches and houses with wooden balconies, their latticework a reminder of Tunja’s role as a key stop on the road north from Bogotá. The architecture isn’t polished for tourists; it’s simply how the city has always been.

The 17th-century cathedral stands as the most striking remnant of that era. Its plain exterior opens to gilded altars and faded frescoes inside. Few visitors enter, so the only sounds are footsteps and the occasional prayer. Nearby, Colombia’s oldest university shapes the city’s rhythm. In the evenings, students fill the squares with music and conversation. Small cafés serve local dishes—ajiaco, a soup of chicken, potatoes, and corn, or tamales, steamed cornmeal stuffed with meat and vegetables. The food is simple, meant to nourish.

The mountains around Tunja aren’t just scenery. The highlands hold thermal springs warmed by volcanic activity, and locals often visit waterfalls or quiet valleys on weekends. Nature isn’t something people observe from a distance—it’s part of life.

Tunja doesn’t try to impress outsiders. There are no staged traditions or carefully curated facades. People greet each other without reason, houses remain unchanged for generations, and the air smells of grass, not exhaust. The city doesn’t pretend. To visit is to step into its rhythm—sipping coffee in a quiet café, walking streets that change little over time, and feeling the unhurried pace of days here.
