Kuala Belait sits on Brunei’s western edge, where the country meets Malaysian Sarawak. The mornings belong to fishermen unloading their catch along the wooden piers. By midday, the market fills with the voices of vendors arranging fresh fish, prawns, and tropical fruit. Evenings soften the pace—families walk the waterfront, open-air cafes send up the smell of grilled seafood, and bicycles glide past.

The town took shape where the Belait River meets the South China Sea. Oil was found here in the early 1900s, and the British built their operations around it. Today, drilling rigs stand on the outskirts, but the town center keeps its own rhythm. Colonial buildings with peeling paint line the streets, holding traces of a past that still feels close. Industry and daily life share the same space—the clatter of a market stall, the low hum of machinery from the oil fields.

The market lets you taste the town before you eat. Stalls brim with seafood still wet from the sea, alongside durian, rambutan, and other fruits you won’t find in supermarkets. Vendors explain how to cook their fish—steam it with ginger or fry it crisp. The air carries the sharpness of fermented shrimp paste and the smoky sweetness of grilled satay. Nearby, small eateries serve noodles in rich broth, rice fried with squid, or chicken skewers charred over flames.

The waterfront is where Kuala Belait slows down. As the sun sets, the piers become gathering places—fishermen fixing nets, old men playing checkers on crates, children running between boats. Oil platforms on the horizon mark the town’s work, but the view stays on the water. The light shifts, conversations drift on the breeze.

It’s not a place that tries to impress. No grand mosques or malls stand here. What you find instead is a town that doesn’t bother with performances. If you want Brunei beyond the capital, spend a day here. Walk its streets, step into shops where the owners know their customers, or stay by the river until the light fades. The town moves with the tides.
