Weather overview

Madrid enjoys a continental Mediterranean climate with clear seasonal changes. Winters are mild, while summers bring heat and dryness. The city sees the most rain in October, but even then, downpours are usually brief. If you prefer comfortable temperatures, April through June and September are ideal for exploring Madrid without extreme weather.

The dry season in Madrid runs from June to August, with July being the hottest month. Nights cool slightly, but daytime temperatures often exceed +30 °C. In contrast, January is the coldest month, though frost is rare. The shoulder seasons—March to May and September to November—offer pleasant conditions for walking and sightseeing.

Temperature

Temperatures in Madrid vary significantly between seasons. In January, the average high is +10.6 °C, while nights can drop to +3.2 °C. By July, the heat peaks, with averages reaching +34.4 °C during the day and +20.7 °C at night. The transition months, like May and October, provide a balance, with daytime highs around +24 °C and +21 °C respectively.

What to pack

For a summer trip to Madrid, pack lightweight, breathable clothing to handle the heat. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential, especially in July and August, when temperatures can exceed +30 °C. Evenings are warm, so a light jacket or shawl may be useful for outdoor dining.

In spring or autumn, layers are key for Madrid’s variable weather. A mix of short- and long-sleeve shirts, along with a light sweater or jacket, will prepare you for temperatures ranging from +10 °C to +25 °C. If visiting in October or November, a compact umbrella or waterproof layer is wise for occasional rain.

Winter in Madrid is mild but can feel cooler in the evenings. A warm coat, scarf, and gloves are useful for January and February, when temperatures occasionally dip near freezing. Comfortable walking shoes are a must year-round, as Madrid’s attractions are best explored on foot.
