La Pampa
La Pampa isn’t a city. It’s a settlement stretched along the Transoceanic Highway, the road connecting Peru to Brazil. The highway is why it exists—originally a pit stop for truckers, prospectors, and those chasing fortunes in the jungle or goldfields.

By day, the heat softens the asphalt. At night, generators hum, bars spill laughter, and trucks rumble past, hauling cargo across the continent.

You won’t find hotels with air conditioning. Instead, there are hostels and roadside lodgings where a bed costs a few soles. Some travelers hitch rides in the backs of trucks. The food is simple: fried chicken with rice, plantain and bean stew, strong coffee for drivers.

Bars play Peruvian cumbia and Brazilian sertanejo. In the corners, tired faces swap stories about gold prices, road conditions, or news from Lima. Everyone knows each other, but no one pries.

La Pampa lives on illegal gold mining. Thousands arrive hoping to strike it rich. Most leave with nothing. A few stay, trapped in exhausting work and shady deals. Mercury, used to extract gold, poisons the rivers and soil. Authorities raid occasionally, but the digging always resumes.

There are no tourists here, no staged performances—just people living real lives, often harsh, sometimes dangerous. If you pass through, stop for a day. Sit in a bar, listen to stories of lost mines and abandoned villages. Then step outside to watch the moon rise over the jungle, casting shadows on the highway that leads everywhere and nowhere.

La Pampa stays with you.
