The town’s most striking landmark is Las Lajas Sanctuary, a church built into the cliffside above a deep gorge. Its Gothic spires and white stone contrast with the wild landscape, while a bridge crosses the chasm to the entrance. Below, the Guáitara River winds through the valley. Locals say the sanctuary was built after an apparition of the Virgin Mary in the early 1900s. Pilgrims from across Latin America visit, drawn by its architecture, history, and the way it fits into the rugged terrain.

Festivals and daily life
Ipiales is a gateway to the Pasto region, known for its traditions. The Carnival of Blacks and Whites, held in nearby Pasto in January, spills into Ipiales with music, dancing, and costumes. Faces are painted white and black in celebration. The rest of the year, life slows down. Markets sell fresh fruit, cheese, and meat. Cafés serve soup to warm up after chilly mornings. Families gather in the main square as evening falls.

Surroundings
There are no crowds here. You can wander narrow streets, browse shops selling handwoven ponchos, or watch locals play chess under trees. Nearby, Laguna Verde glows green from minerals. Volcanoes stay snow-capped even in warmer months.
