Weather overview

Эль-Ула sits in the heart of Saudi Arabia’s desert landscape, where the climate is defined by its stark dryness and dramatic temperature shifts. The year unfolds in two distinct halves: a cooler stretch from November to March, when daytime warmth is balanced by chilly nights, and a scorching summer from April to October, with relentless heat that peaks in July and August.

Rainfall in Эль-Ула is rare, with most of the year’s modest precipitation clustered in November and December. The rest of the months see little to no rain, reinforcing the desert’s arid character. Travelers should note that even in the cooler months, the air remains dry, and the sun dominates the sky almost every day.

Temperature

Temperatures in Эль-Ула swing widely between seasons, with daytime highs often exceeding +40 °C in the summer and dipping to +17 °C in the coolest months. January and February bring the mildest weather, with daytime averages around +22.7 °C and nights cooling to +11 °C. By March, the heat begins to build, and by May, daytime temperatures routinely climb above +38 °C.

The peak of summer arrives in July and August, when highs reach +43.1 °C and lows rarely drop below +28.9 °C. Even at night, the air retains its warmth, offering little respite. The heat begins to ease in September, though temperatures remain high until October, when Эль-Ула finally starts to cool. By November, the days become pleasant again, with highs around +29.6 °C and nights growing noticeably cooler.

Precipitation

Rain in Эль-Ула is a rare event, with the desert receiving only about 43 mm of precipitation annually. Most of this falls in November and December, when brief showers occasionally dust the landscape. February and April see minimal rainfall, while the summer months—June through September—are entirely dry.

The lack of rain means travelers can expect clear skies almost year-round, though the occasional shower in November or December might bring a fleeting change. Even in the wettest months, the ground dries quickly, and the desert’s arid nature remains unchanged.

What to pack

For a trip to Эль-Ула in the cooler months—November through March—pack layers to adapt to the temperature swings. Days can be warm, with highs around +24 °C, but nights often drop to +11 °C, so a light jacket or sweater is useful. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are essential year-round to shield against the desert sun.

Visiting in the summer—April to October—requires preparation for extreme heat. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in breathable fabrics will help manage the +40 °C temperatures, while a scarf or shawl can provide extra sun protection. Hydration is critical, so carry water at all times, and plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun.
