Julfa sits on the edge of Azerbaijan, where the Araz River marks the border with Iran. It’s a place where Armenian, Persian, and Turkic traditions meet, where minarets stand near ancient Christian churches, and where the dry foothills stretch under a vast sky. The river moves slowly, giving the landscape a quiet beauty.
The history here runs deep. Once a key stop on the Silk Road, Julfa was a crossroads for merchants traveling between Europe and Asia. Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of empires—the Safavids, the Russians—each leaving their mark. Julfa is known for its medieval Armenian cemeteries, home to khachkars, carved stone crosses that are considered masterpieces of medieval art. Many were lost in the last century, but those that remain show detailed craftsmanship.
Today, Julfa is a small town where life moves at an easy pace.
Locals farm the land, trade at the market, and gather by the river in the evenings to talk and drink tea. The surrounding hills are dotted with vineyards and orchards, and in autumn, the air carries the scent of ripe pomegranates and figs.
The streets and stones seem to carry echoes of another time. If you come here, wander the narrow lanes, visit the old mosques, then sit by the Araz and watch the water flow. Time moves differently in Julfa.
