Baalbek is a place where stones whisper stories of empires long gone. It sits in the Beqaa Valley, at the crossroads of ancient trade routes that once connected the Mediterranean to the Middle East. The city’s Roman temple complex is one of the largest built outside Rome. Baalbek’s history includes Phoenicians, Greeks, Arabs, and Ottomans, each shaping its culture and landscape.

The archaeological site
At the heart of Baalbek are the ruins of the temples of Jupiter, Bacchus, and Venus. The Temple of Jupiter Heliopolitanus, built in the 2nd century, was among the largest in the Roman Empire. Its columns reach twenty meters high, and stone blocks weigh hundreds of tons. Nearby, the Temple of Bacchus stands intact, its carvings and porticoes preserved. The Temple of Venus was later used as a Byzantine basilica and then an Arab fortress, showing how faiths and purposes changed over time.

The site is most striking at sunset, when light falls on the remaining pillars.

The city today
Baalbek moves at its own pace. Narrow streets pass shops selling sweets, cafés with Arabic coffee, and houses with Ottoman-era balconies. Each summer, the Baalbek International Festival turns the temples into a stage for music—classical, jazz, and traditional Arab performances. The sound of violins and oud mixes with the wind through the columns.

The Beqaa Valley
The valley around Baalbek is fertile, with vineyards and fields. Local restaurants serve herb-roasted lamb, mezze platters, and honey desserts. Visitors often say Baalbek engages the senses because the past lingers in the quiet air.
