Stellenbosch Wineries

Stellenbosch is about an hour from Cape Town. Founded in 1679, it’s South Africa’s second-oldest European settlement. The valleys here were planted with vines from the start, and today, the area has over 150 wine estates.

The town still looks like it did centuries ago. Whitewashed Cape Dutch houses line the streets, their gables worn by time, while old oak trees shade the sidewalks. Water channels run alongside the roads—leftovers from the early farms. Stellenbosch University, the country’s oldest, adds a layer of student energy, making the town feel a little out of sync with the rest of the region.

Almost every estate offers tastings. You’ll usually try five or six wines, sometimes with cheese or chocolate. Many have cellar tours, and most serve food made from local ingredients. But the real reason to visit? The estates themselves. Old farmhouses sit in gardens that slope toward the mountains, and wandering the grounds is half the experience.

This is where pinotage was born—a cross between pinot noir and cinsault. The region also grows chenin blanc, shiraz, and cabernet sauvignon. The wines range from crisp whites to bold reds, and the only way to know them is to taste.

Don’t drive between estates. Local laws are strict, and distances are easy to misjudge after a few glasses. A guided tour with a driver or the local wine tram is safer. Book tastings ahead, especially from November to March, when the weather is warm and the vineyards are full.

If you want a break from wine, there’s a small open-air museum with four historic houses, each showing a different era. A few galleries display local art, and the university’s botanical garden is a quiet place to walk. Some estates also offer overnight stays, from simple rooms to more comfortable guesthouses.

Stellenbosch has a way of making time slow down. Sitting on a terrace with a glass of wine, walking under the oaks, or watching the light shift over the mountains—it’s easy to forget how close you are to the city. That’s why people return.
