La Fore Park

La Forêt Park in Rochefort

La Forêt Park isn’t like other green spaces. It sits in the Ardennes, where the past and the present blur under the canopy of ancient trees. Here, time doesn’t rush—it lingers between the roots of oaks and the whispers of the wind.

The forest has survived centuries. Medieval lords once claimed these lands, then monasteries took over, shielding them from axes. Even when Belgium’s factories devoured forests in the 1800s, La Forêt stayed whole. No one knows why—maybe the isolation helped, maybe luck. Now, it’s one of the last places in the Ardennes where nature still feels untouched.

Walk here, and the trails pull you deeper. Massive beeches and oaks stand like sentinels, their trunks too wide to wrap your arms around. Wetlands hide rare plants in the low areas, while sunlit clearings sometimes reveal old stone crosses. These markers show where pilgrims once passed. In summer, the air stays cool under the leaves. In autumn, the ground softens underfoot, muffling steps in layers of gold and brown.

Wildlife moves through the trees unseen. Deer and wild boar cross the paths, and if you’re quiet, you might glimpse a wildcat or a badger. Birds fill the branches—cuckoos in spring, woodpeckers tapping in summer. Winter brings silence, broken only by the crunch of snow.

For those who want more than a walk, the park has trails with stories to tell. One follows the forest’s history: how timber was cut, how hunting shaped the land, how people once gathered herbs. Another explains the rocks beneath your feet—formations millions of years old. Cyclists and riders share the paths, and in winter, skiers glide where hikers once stepped.

There are no cafes here, no souvenir stands. La Forêt doesn’t try to please. It offers something else: a place where nature isn’t tamed. Locals come to escape. Travelers come to remember what it’s like to be small under the trees.

Visit Rochefort, and spend an afternoon here. Grab a map, pick a trail. You won’t find anything flashy—just trees, paths, and the sky. But that’s the point. The forest doesn’t give up its secrets at once. It waits, letting you return, again and again.
