Juniper Grove

The Juniper Grove sits on the slopes above Blue Bay. These trees are survivors, remnants of the forests that once covered these shores. Some junipers here are three or four centuries old; a few might be close to a thousand. Their trunks twist toward the sky, thick bark etched by wind and salt into shapes that look almost intentional. Many grow nearly horizontal, leaning into the sea breeze, their canopies casting shifting shadows over the rocks.

This grove grows slowly. A millimeter or two each year—that’s all. A broken branch won’t heal in a lifetime. The trees share the thin soil with the blunt-leaved pistachio, downy oak, and Stankevich’s pine. The rules here are straightforward: stay on the path, don’t pick anything, don’t light fires. The dry litter underfoot is flammable, and one spark could destroy centuries of growth in hours.

Walk here at midday, and the air smells sharp, resinous. The sun warms the needles, releasing phytoncides—compounds that give the grove its distinct, almost medicinal scent. Locals come to breathe it in, to escape the heavier air near the coast. The effect isn’t dramatic, but it’s real.

The grove is part of the Golitsyn Trail. The section through the junipers is the shadiest stretch, a break from the open sun. It takes about twenty minutes to walk through, though you might want to stay longer. In spring, wildflowers—orchids and others—bloom under the trees, but the trail is narrow. Stepping off it isn’t allowed. This isn’t a park; it’s a fragile place, and every step counts.

From the higher points, Blue Bay appears below, its waters shifting from turquoise to deep blue. The view is worth the climb, but the grove itself is the real draw. The light filters through the branches, the wind moves through the needles, and the trees stand as they have for centuries. There’s no visitor center, no plaque. Just the quiet persistence of life, shaped by time, and the chance to walk through a world that feels older than memory.
