Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Seria

The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception in Seria is one of the few Christian places of worship in Brunei. The building is modest—white, with a small bell tower. For Brunei’s Catholic community, it’s a spiritual anchor and a sign of the country’s religious diversity.

Oil was discovered in Seria in the early 20th century, and the town grew as workers from around the world arrived. Many were Christians. By the 1930s, a small Catholic community had formed, and the need for a permanent place of worship grew. The current building was constructed later, offering a space for services.

The church’s design is simple. A single nave, rectangular layout, and gabled roof. A small cross sits on the facade, and above the entrance, a niche holds an image of the Virgin Mary. Inside, wooden pews, a few icons, and a restrained altar. The space feels warm, a place for quiet reflection.

In Brunei, where Muslims are the majority, Christian churches are rare. This one serves as both a spiritual and cultural hub. Sunday masses, holiday services, and community gatherings bring together expatriates and locals. For many, it offers a sense of familiarity in a new place.

Seria is often overlooked. Visitors prefer Bandar Seri Begawan, with its mosques and palaces. But Seria tells another side of Brunei’s story—a town shaped by migration and industry. The church stands as a reminder of that history.

Brunei’s laws regulate religious activity. Christian communities can worship, but proselytization and new church construction are restricted. Here, the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is a symbol of coexistence within those limits. It’s where tradition and modernity, local and foreign, meet.

Few tourists visit. The church is open during services and on weekdays. For those curious about Brunei beyond its mosques, it offers a different view—one of everyday faith and community.

Its presence matters. In a country where Islam shapes public life, it shows that other beliefs exist. In Seria, a town built by people from different backgrounds, the church is one thread in a complex fabric.
