Weather overview

Ховд sits in western Mongolia, where the climate swings between extreme cold and brief warmth. Winters here are long and harsh, with temperatures often dropping below -20 °C in January and December. By March, the air begins to thaw, though nights remain chilly. The short summer, from June to August, brings the most comfortable conditions, with daytime highs around +25 °C.

Travelers should note that Ховд experiences sharp seasonal shifts. The transition from winter to spring in April and May is rapid, while autumn arrives quickly in September, cooling the air just as fast. The dry climate means most precipitation falls in summer, particularly in June and July, though even then, rain is infrequent.

Winter in Ховд is severe, with January averaging -22.3 °C and nighttime lows plunging to -27.4 °C. By March, temperatures rise above freezing during the day, though nights still dip below -10 °C. What to pack

For a winter trip to Ховд, thermal layers, a heavy coat, and insulated footwear are essential. Temperatures in January and December can drop below -25 °C, so windproof clothing and gloves will help. A hat and scarf are also necessary to protect against the cold.

In summer, lightweight clothing is suitable for Ховд’s warm days, but evenings can still be cool, especially in June and August. A light jacket or sweater is useful for nights. If visiting in May or September, pack layers to adjust to the changing temperatures. Since rain is rare, waterproof gear is only necessary for the summer months.
