Uruk
Uruk sits on the banks of the Euphrates in southern Iraq. The desert wind stirs the dust of history here. This is where the world’s first great city took shape—humans built towering temples, etched words into clay, and organized themselves into settlements larger than villages. Today, the ruins stretch across the landscape: low walls of sunbaked brick, scattered foundations, fragments of structures.

The Eanna ziggurat stood at the city’s heart. It was a stepped temple dedicated to Inanna, goddess of love and war. Though little remains of its original height, the ruins show the ambition of its builders. Nearby, archaeologists found temple complexes where priests and scribes recorded transactions, hymns, and laws on clay tablets. These cuneiform fragments are the earliest known writing—the moment human thought began to leave a permanent mark.

Uruk gave the world the Epic of Gilgamesh. The poem tells of kingship, mortality, and the search for meaning. Trade routes connected its markets to Iran, Arabia, and the Indus Valley. Here, coins were minted, bureaucracies formed, and statecraft took shape. The city was where law, religion, and urban life first came together.

The wind carries echoes of a time when streets held merchants, priests, and laborers. Wars, floods, and time have worn most of it away. But the ruins still hold power. There are no golden treasures or reconstructed palaces—just the weight of history. You walk where Gilgamesh ruled, where scribes pressed reeds into clay, where civilization began.

Few travelers come. Iraq’s complexities keep most away, and Uruk is less known than Babylon or Nineveh. But those who visit find a place untouched by spectacle. The past isn’t curated here. It’s beneath your feet, as real as the earth. Uruk endures—a witness to humanity’s first steps toward something greater.
