Stresa sits on the western shore of Lake Maggiore, where the Alps ease gently into the water. It’s not a place that shouts for attention, though visitors keep finding their way here—some for just a day’s escape from Milan, others to linger a little longer, drawn by the quiet rhythm of lakeside life. The town is small enough to explore on foot in an afternoon: narrow streets lined with houses whose shutters glow in soft pastels, cafés where espresso comes with a view of the water, and a stillness broken only by the lap of waves and the cry of gulls.

What brings most people to Stresa are the Borromean Islands, a trio of islets just a short boat ride away. Isola Bella dazzles with its Baroque palace and terraced gardens, where camellias and magnolias spill down the slopes. Isola Madre feels like stepping into a living painting, its exotic plants and wandering peacocks making it seem untouched by time. Then there’s Isola dei Pescatori, the only inhabited island, where fishermen still mend their nets in the shadow of pastel houses. The lake shifts between turquoise and deep blue, and on clear days, the distant peaks of the Alps frame the horizon.

Life here moves at its own pace. Mornings begin with locals gathering in the square outside the town hall, coffee in hand, debating the day’s news over a game of cards. Small shops sell olive oil pressed from nearby hills and wine from Piedmont’s vineyards. By evening, the promenade comes alive with the clink of glasses and the scent of grilled lake trout or risotto studded with seafood. There’s no rush, no need to fill the hours with anything more than a slow meal or a stroll along the water.

For a different perspective, the funicular climbs to the summit of Mottarone, where the lake unfolds below like a vast mirror. On the clearest days, the snow-capped peaks of Monte Rosa rise in the distance, their reflection shimmering on the water’s surface.

Unlike Venice or Florence, Stresa doesn’t feel crowded, even in high season. There are no must-see checklists here, just the quiet pleasure of sitting on a bench by the water, watching boats drift past. It’s the kind of place where time seems to soften, where the best moments are often the ones that don’t demand anything at all. Stresa doesn’t ask you to do—it invites you to simply be.
