Singapore

A fishing village in the 19th century, today it packs skyscrapers, tropical gardens, and a train system that covers the entire island in under an hour. The streets stay dry even when it pours because drains are built into the sidewalks. Colonial shophouses stand next to buildings shaped like waves and parks suspended above ground.

Chinatown’s temples still burn incense beside stalls selling chili crab and Hainanese chicken rice. Little India’s shops display stacks of turmeric-dyed saris and silver bangles, while Kampong Glam’s shady verandas host cafés where locals read newspapers over teh tarik. These neighborhoods aren’t museum pieces; they’re where people live, work, and argue over football scores.

Gardens by the Bay’s supertrees light up after dark, and their glass domes shelter ferns from South America and baobabs from Africa. Marina Bay Sands’ rooftop pool overlooks the entire city, while Sentosa Island’s beaches and Universal Studios draw families on weekends. In the parks, long-tailed macaques steal snacks from picnickers, and monitor lizards bask on the concrete edges of reservoirs.

The trains arrive every two minutes during rush hour. Littering fines start at $1,000, but the city doesn’t feel like a rulebook—it feels like a place where things just work. Between the glass towers, kopitiams serve coffee with condensed milk, and at Lau Pa Sat, satay skewers sizzle over charcoal until midnight. Hawker centers serve laksa, roti prata, and bak kut teh for less than five dollars a bowl.

You’ll notice the mix isn’t forced. A Hindu temple sits next to a mosque, which sits next to a Buddhist monastery, and none of them look out of place. The city’s rhythm changes block by block: quiet in the morning near the Botanic Gardens, loud at lunchtime in Raffles Place, sleepy after midnight in Joo Chiat. It doesn’t fit into one story, and that’s why you keep noticing new details every time you turn a corner.
