Portree
Portree is the largest town on the Isle of Skye, yet it doesn’t feel like one. It clings to a sheltered bay where the water mirrors pastel houses climbing the hillside. The town wraps around the harbour, fishing boats tied to the pier, seagulls circling above. There’s no promenade—just a working waterfront where saltwater mixes with diesel fumes from the boats.

In the morning, fishermen unload their catch at the stone quay. The local smokehouse sends peat-scented smoke into the air. By afternoon, harbourfront cafés serve tea, langoustines, and smoked salmon. Pubs fill with conversation—English, Gaelic, laughter after a day outdoors. The past isn’t locked in museums here; it lingers in how people talk about the weather, the tides, the days when herring ruled.

The landscape takes over beyond the town. The Cuillin mountains loom, their slopes shifting from purple mist to gold at sunset. Cliffs drop into the water, and on clear days, the Isle of Raasay appears across the sound. Footpaths wind along the shore or into the hills, where sheep graze and the wind is the only sound. Dolphins sometimes pass the harbour mouth. Whales, if you’re lucky, spout in the distance.

Portree is small enough to walk in an hour. Narrow streets twist past whitewashed cottages and shops selling wool or crafts. The town square is just a widening of the road, with benches and a view of the harbour. No cathedral, no castle—just a stone church and quiet that slows you down. Even the market feels like a neighbourly gathering.

Evening softens the light over the bay. Streetlights flicker on, casting shadows on cobbled lanes. Pubs hum with voices and clinking glasses. There’s no nightlife, just peace—a place the world hasn’t quite caught up with. For all its visitors, Portree feels like a secret, one that’s always been here.
