Weather overview

Panajachel sits at an elevation of about 1,500 meters above sea level, which keeps its climate mild year-round. The town experiences two distinct seasons: a dry season and a rainy season. From November to April, the weather in Panajachel is mostly dry, with plenty of sunshine and cooler evenings. The rainy season runs from May to October, bringing frequent showers, especially in the afternoons and evenings.

Despite the rain, Panajachel rarely feels oppressive. The temperatures remain steady, and the lush landscapes around Lake Atitlán thrive during these months. If you prefer drier conditions, plan your visit between January and March, when the skies are clearest and the days are warm without being too hot.

Temperature

Temperatures in Panajachel stay pleasant throughout the year, with daytime highs typically ranging between +23 °C and +27 °C. The warmest months are March, April, and May, when the mercury can reach +27 °C during the day. Evenings are cooler, often dropping to around +15 °C to +17 °C, so a light jacket is useful after sunset.

The coolest period in Panajachel is from November to February, when daytime temperatures hover around +24 °C and nights can feel chilly at +14 °C to +15 °C. The lack of extreme heat or cold makes Panajachel a comfortable destination at any time of year, though mornings and evenings may require an extra layer.

What to pack

For a trip to Panajachel during the dry season, pack lightweight clothing for warm days and a light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings. A hat and sunscreen are essential, as the sun can be strong even when temperatures are mild. If you’re visiting between May and October, include a compact rain jacket or umbrella to stay dry during afternoon showers.

Comfortable walking shoes are a must year-round, especially if you plan to explore the surrounding hills or villages. During the rainy season, waterproof footwear can be helpful for muddy trails. Since evenings can be cool, a scarf or shawl is a versatile addition to your packing list, regardless of the season.
