Mukono
Few travelers include Mukono on their Uganda itinerary. Yet this town, a 30-kilometer drive from Kampala, offers a different side of the country. No traffic jams, no souvenir stalls—just quiet streets lined with mango trees and neighbors who wave as you pass. Here, life unfolds without hurry, and the welcome feels sincere.

The landscape rolls gently, covered in banana groves, coffee bushes, and cassava fields. These crops define Mukono’s economy, their fragrance strongest at dawn when farmers set out to work. Small workshops dot the town: potters shape clay, weavers twist reeds into baskets, and tailors stitch barkcloth into garments. At the market, vendors sell pineapples, groundnuts, and handmade soap. Bargaining often ends with laughter and an extra handful of passionfruit.

Mukono hosts Uganda Christian University, founded in 1913. The campus, shaded by fig trees, brings a steady hum of students to the town. On Fridays, debate clubs spill into cafés, discussing everything from local elections to Afrofuturism. For many Ugandans, Mukono represents education’s power to shape the nation.

The pace here slows you down. You notice it in the way elders sip tea on verandas, in the games children invent with old car tires, in the long shadows of late afternoon. Accommodations are simple—family-run guesthouses with creaky floors and home-cooked meals—but they let you experience daily life without filters. Some hosts might teach you to prepare matoke, steamed green bananas mashed with peanut sauce.

No lions or waterfalls draw crowds to Mukono. What you find instead is a place that doesn’t try to impress. It simply is: a town where a stranger’s question about the weather can turn into an hour’s conversation, where the rhythm of the seasons matters more than the clock. If you come, stay a while. Walk the red-dirt roads, buy a basket from the woman who wove it, and see if Mukono doesn’t linger in your memory long after you leave.
