Weather overview

Mapiri sits in Bolivia’s tropical lowlands, where the weather stays warm year-round but shifts between wet and dry periods. From January to March, the town experiences its rainiest months, with frequent downpours and high humidity. By April, the rains begin to taper off, leading into a drier stretch from May to September. This is when Mapiri sees the least precipitation and slightly cooler nights, though daytime temperatures remain pleasant.

The transition months—October through December—bring a mix of conditions, with occasional showers returning as the wet season approaches. Despite the rain, Mapiri rarely feels oppressive, thanks to its elevation and consistent breezes. Travelers should note that even in the driest months, humidity lingers, keeping the air feeling thick and the landscape lush.

Temperature

Temperatures in Mapiri hover in a narrow range, rarely straying far from 20–30 °C throughout the year. The warmest months, October and November, see highs around 30.7 °C and 30.1 °C, respectively, while nights dip to a mild 19.7–20.3 °C. The coolest period arrives in June and July, when daytime highs average 26.2 °C and 25.5 °C, and nights can drop to 17.1 °C and 16.6 °C.

Even in the cooler months, Mapiri doesn’t experience extreme temperature swings. The difference between day and night is more noticeable than seasonal shifts, with evenings often feeling refreshingly cooler after the heat of the afternoon. For those sensitive to humidity, the slightly drier air from May to August may feel more comfortable, despite the modest drop in temperatures.

Precipitation

Rain defines much of Mapiri’s climate, with a pronounced wet season from January to March. During these months, rainfall peaks at 225 mm in March, often falling in heavy afternoon showers. The dry season, from May to September, offers a reprieve, with monthly precipitation dropping to as low as 41 mm in July. Even so, brief showers can occur, especially in the early mornings or late evenings.

The shoulder months—April, October, and November—act as a bridge between the wet and dry seasons. April sees a sharp decline in rain, while October and November mark the return of more frequent showers. Travelers visiting Mapiri during the wet season should prepare for sudden downpours, though they rarely last all day. The dry season, meanwhile, is ideal for outdoor activities, with clearer skies and lower humidity.

What to pack

Packing for Mapiri depends on the season, but lightweight, breathable clothing is essential year-round. During the wet season, from January to March, quick-dry fabrics and a sturdy rain jacket will help navigate the frequent showers. Waterproof footwear is also useful, as trails and unpaved roads can become muddy. A compact umbrella may come in handy, though it’s worth noting that heavy rain can make it less effective.

For the drier months, from May to September, layers are key. Days are warm, often reaching 26–28 °C, but nights can cool to 16–18 °C, especially in June and July. A light sweater or long-sleeve shirt is enough to stay comfortable after sunset. Sunscreen and a hat are advisable year-round, as the sun remains strong even on cloudy days. Insect repellent is also recommended, particularly during the wetter months when mosquitoes are more active.
